ReCAIcle is an innovative research project by seventhings GmbH and TU Dresden to develop an AI-supported conversational agent for sustainable corporate management. The aim is to make the use of operating resources such as IT equipment, furniture or machines more resource-efficient and to actively implement the principles of the circular economy. With the help of artificial intelligence and user-centred design, ReCAIcle supports companies in using assets more efficiently, extending life cycles and reducing CO₂ emissions. The project combines technology, psychology and sustainability and creates new impetus for digitalisation and environmental protection. Project

The project “ReCAIcle” is a joint initiative by seventhings GmbH and TU Dresden aiming to develop an AI-based conversational agent (CA) that promotes sustainable behavior in the use of corporate assets.

Its goal is to integrate circular economy principles into everyday business operations through a digital assistant.
The CA will simulate human interaction and provide personalized recommendations for sustainable use, repair, or reuse of equipment.

The project runs for three years (2024–2027) and is funded under the InnoTeam innovation program.

At its core, it combines expertise from computer science, psychology, design, and sustainability research in an interdisciplinary approach.

Goals
 

The main goal is to scientifically demonstrate that an AI-supported agent can motivate users toward more sustainable behavior in resource use.


This includes achieving resource savings, extending product lifecycles, and fostering environmental awareness.


The CA will respond to individual usage data, offer tailored advice, and incorporate user feedback in real-time.


In the long term, a market-ready SaaS solution will be developed, capable of integration into existing platforms.


Additionally, the project aims to upskill the core team in AI, UX, and sustainability topics.

Relevance

The project addresses key challenges of a sustainable economy, especially in the context of digitalization and resource consumption.


It bridges artificial intelligence with circular economy goals, creating impact far beyond asset management.


Particularly in companies, where depreciation practices, user expectations, and employer branding often conflict with sustainability, ReCAIcle provides targeted solutions.


Its results can also be transferred to other sectors like mobility, consumer goods, or energy.


ReCAIcle contributes directly to Saxony’s innovation strategy—particularly in the areas of environment, digitalization, and platform economy.
